The Joy of the Game: Why Community Outings Matter

There’s something powerful about being part of a crowd, sharing the same excitement, and cheering for the same team. For people with developmental disabilities, moments like these are more than just fun; they’re a reminder that they belong.

Earlier this summer, AbleLight supported two groups of baseball fans in attending St. Louis Cardinals home games at Busch Stadium. The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, and the thrill of being in the stands created memories that will last a lifetime. But the real impact went far beyond the scoreboard.

“Being in the stands with our team and the people we support was a joy,” shared Keith Jones, AbleLight President and CEO. “These outings aren’t just about baseball. They’re about belonging, and that’s something every person deserves.”

Beyond the Ballpark

Experiences like this foster more than just excitement. They provide people with developmental disabilities a chance to participate in the life of their community in visible, joyful, and meaningful ways. Community outings can reduce social isolation, boost confidence, and encourage friendships. They also remind the broader public of the value of inclusive spaces where everyone is welcome.

These outings also reflect a broader national conversation. A recent ESPN feature highlighted how stadiums across the country are creating better experiences for fans with invisible disabilities. From quiet rooms to sensory-friendly seating, sports organizations are rethinking how to welcome every fan.

Inclusion Through Everyday Experiences

At AbleLight, we believe inclusion should not be limited to certain settings. It should extend into every aspect of life, from housing and employment to recreation and spiritual wellness. Outings like the baseball games show what’s possible when people are given the opportunity to engage fully in their communities.

Whether it’s a day at the ballpark, a trip to the museum, or an afternoon at the local fair, shared experiences help build connection, belonging, and joy. And those things matter, every season of the year.
