How to Get Involved at AbleLight Thrift Shops

Storefront of AbleLight Thrift Shop in Appleton, WI

AbleLight Thrift Shops are more than a place to find a good deal. They are community spaces that support people with developmental disabilities, create opportunities for connection, and extend the life of used items.

When you get involved with AbleLight Thrift, you are helping people with developmental disabilities live with more security, opportunity, and belonging in their communities.

Why AbleLight Thrift Matters

Every donated item, purchase, and volunteer hour supports AbleLight’s mission to support people with developmental disabilities. Our thrift shops help:

  • Provide funding that supports life-changing services
  • Create inclusive job opportunities for people with developmental disabilities
  • Build welcoming spaces where people of all abilities can connect
  • Promote sustainability by keeping quality items in use.

AbleLight Thrift Shops provide simple ways for everyday actions to make a real difference!

Shop with purpose

One of the easiest ways to support this work is to shop at your local AbleLight Thrift Shop. When you choose thrift for clothing, home goods, books, décor, and more, you:

  • Find quality items at affordable prices
  • Express your style in a creative, budget-friendly way
  • Know your purchases are helping support people with developmental disabilities

Earlier this month, we celebrated Customer Appreciation Day at all AbleLight Thrift Shop locations. Shoppers enjoyed special savings while also supporting services that help people live more full and connected lives.

Donate gently used items

Your gently used items can become someone else’s new favorite find. Donations help keep the stores stocked and support the mission behind them. Consider donating:

  • Clothing, shoes, and accessories
  • Household items and small décor
  • Books and media

Before you drop off, check with your local AbleLight Thrift Shop locations for donation hours and guidelines

Volunteer your time

Volunteers help create the warm, welcoming atmosphere that shoppers experience. Depending on the store, volunteers may assist with sorting, organizing, or with behind-the-scenes tasks that keep everything running smoothly.

Volunteering at AbleLight Thrift can be a way to:

  • Meet new people
  • Support inclusion in a practical, hands-on way
  • Give back on a schedule that works for you

Stay connected

As we approach Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM) in March, we will be sharing more stories and ways to get involved across AbleLight, including at our thrift shops.
