Every year around Father’s Day, we see ads for the perfect gift for dad. The tie, the tool set, the mega-grill, the membership to the steak of the month club. This year, especially for fathers of people with a disability, an even better gift may be simple appreciation.
Becoming the parent of a young person with special needs is daunting. Suddenly, they’re thrust into a new situation with few answers and tremendous responsibility. For so many dads, this is seen as a challenge to conquer. They dig in and, with the support of their families and friends, help build the best possible life for their loved ones. They make it happen.
For this holiday, we’ve collected a few essays that celebrate all that fathers of people with disabilities do and why they matter so much. Enjoy, and Happy Father’s Day!
