DENVER, CO – AbleLight, a nonprofit and national leader in supporting people with developmental disabilities, received a grant from the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) to add two new vans to its Day Program in Denver, Colorado. The vans, which arrived on Monday, June 23, 2025, are essential in keeping the program open and helping participants stay connected, preventing the physical and social isolation that so many people with developmental disabilities face.
“Many individuals with developmental disabilities are limited in their access to the community, causing loneliness that significantly impacts their overall well-being and quality of life,” said Andrea Aldinger, Area Vice President, Colorado at AbleLight. “These vans give people the meaningful opportunity to get out into the local area, connect with others, and gain a sense of belonging that supports their health and happiness.”
AbleLight’s Day Program serves as a bridge to the community, offering individuals with developmental disabilities an array of activities designed to foster personal growth, independence, and fulfillment while forming meaningful connections in a fun and positive atmosphere. Participants in the program build empowering relationships and develop essential life skills, significantly reducing physical and social isolation while working toward their individual goals. In Colorado, the program is also in Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, and Grand Junction.
Through DRCOG’s Human Services Transportation program, the grant covered 85% of the cost, with AbleLight providing the remaining 15% as a local match. Each van features AbleLight branding to help raise awareness and encourage involvement from potential clients, volunteers, and donors. The retired vans will be repurposed for other programs or sent to auction.
In fiscal year 2024, the Day Program provided 50,000 hours of support, averaging 263 hours per person. To learn more about their Day Program, please visit their website.
