AbleLight Joins National Advocacy Event to Protect Medicaid

Speaking up to protect essential services for people with developmental disabilities.

On April 23-24, AbleLight joined advocacy partners from across the country in Washington, D.C. to elevate the importance of protecting Medicaid funding, especially the critical supports provided through Medicaid Long-Term Supports and Services (LTSS).

AbleLight team member, Candace, represented our organization at the Spring Meeting and Advocacy Day with Lutheran Services in America Disability Network, where disability organizations from around the country united to advocate for continued Medicaid support. The two-day event focused on protecting access to these essential services, highlighting the critical role they play in the lives of people with developmental disabilities.

Over the course of the event, attendees received updates on Medicaid policy, learned more about the potential impact of federal budget changes, and met with congressional offices from both political parties. These meetings emphasized the importance of preserving Medicaid funding for the individuals and families who rely on it every day.

Why This Matters

Medicaid LTSS funds the services that help people with developmental disabilities live safely, grow their independence, and participate in their communities. As we enter a critical period, Congress is actively drafting a budget reconciliation bill that could include significant reforms to Medicaid. The outcomes of this process may affect access to essential supports and shift financial strain to states, putting services at risk for those who need them most.

That’s why advocacy right now is especially important. AbleLight continues to work alongside national partners like ANCOR and Lutheran Services in America Disability Network to ensure lawmakers hear directly from those impacted and understand what’s at stake for people with developmental disabilities.

How You Can Help

With decisions being made in the coming weeks, your voice can make a meaningful difference. Here’s how to get involved:

  • Learn More: Understand how these Medicaid LTSS supports people with developmental disabilities, helps ensure these services remain strong and accessible.
  • Share Your Story: Personal stories can make a powerful impact on lawmakers. If Medicaid services have helped you or someone you love, consider sharing your experience.
  • Contact Congress: Use ANCOR’s Medicaid Action Center to easily send a message to your representatives or learn more about current advocacy efforts.

These actions matter. Lawmakers are listening, and your voice is helping protect essential services for people with developmental disabilities. AbleLight will continue to advocate and share updates as the process moves forward. Your support remains a powerful force for good.
