AbleLight Advocates for Developmental Disability Funding at Missouri Disability Rights Legislative Day

AbleLight Employees and People Supported by AbleLight Address Funding Crisis.

AbleLight Employees and people supported by AbleLight joined forces with Starling member organizations at the Missouri State Capitol on February 26, 2025, for Disability Rights Legislative Day, advocating for policies that protect access to essential services for people with developmental disability (DD). Under the theme “We are Here,” the event focused on the importance of Medicaid Long-Term Supports and Services (LTSS) in helping individuals with DD live independently, participate in their communities, and receive the care they need.

Organized by the Missouri Developmental Disability Council (MODDC), the event brought together advocates, individuals with DD, families, and community supporters to discuss how potential changes in Medicaid funding at the federal level may impact services at the state level. These services play a crucial role in ensuring people with DD can thrive in their communities.

AbleLight employees and people supported by AbleLight participated in the rally and met with state legislators to share personal stories about the role Medicaid LTSS plays in their lives. They highlighted the significance of funding that provides essential needs, impacting housing, employment supports, day programs, and overall well-being.

“People with developmental disabilities rely on these services to live, work, and engage with their community,” said Keith Jones, AbleLight President and CEO. “Adequate funding ensures these essential supports are provided, allowing them to live full lives without fear of losing vital care.”

The advocacy efforts underscored the ongoing need for strong, sustainable support for the DD community. AbleLight remains committed to the voices of people with DD are heard and will continue to advocate for policies that prioritize their needs and dignity.
