March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month!
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month started in 1987 to help raise awareness about creating a more inclusive society for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Since then, many incredible achievements have been made – including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which became law in 1990. The ADA was instrumental in opening the door to employment, education, public services, transportation, and physical access for individuals with disabilities.
While there have been many positive changes since the start of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in 1987, the I/DD community still faces challenges.
At AbleLight, we believe the world shines brighter when individuals with developmental disabilities can achieve their full potential! We are proud to celebrate the amazing people we serve and highlight a few ways that you can get involved this month.
Thrive Together: Enriching Lives. Creating Opportunities.
AbleLight is proud to create unique opportunities that truly enrich the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities. We can all thrive together when the people we support have the chance to participate in fun and exciting activities in their community.
Every summer, AbleLight hosts the Mountain Builders Summer Camp in Colorado Springs. It’s an incredible opportunity for campers with developmental disabilities to create life-long memories and participate in activities they normally wouldn’t experience. Campers can participate in activities such as horseback riding, zip-lining, archery, fishing, sharing their faith, and so much more!
Camp is just one example of how we create enriching opportunities for the people we support at AbleLight.
Get involved!
- Stay tuned throughout the month as we continue to share stories about the amazing people we support, including Chris and Jenni. Their stories will truly inspire you!
- All month long, AbleLight is participating in a Grant Match Challenge. If we can reach our goal of raising $50,000, an additional $50,000 will be unlocked to help fund life-changing programs for people with disabilities. Together, we can create more opportunities that enrich the lives of the people we serve! Donate today to help us reach our goal!
- You can participate in Wear Orange Wednesdays all month long! Orange is a symbol of hope, understanding, and inclusivity, and it represents the vibrant diversity of the I/DD community.
