What is National Nurses Week?
Every year, from May 6th to May 12th, we take a moment to celebrate the compassionate and skilled individuals who are at the heart of care for National Nurses Week. This special week ends on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, whose innovative work shaped the nursing profession and redefined what it means to care with both knowledge and heart.
At AbleLight, we’re proud to honor our nurses and the vital role they play in the lives of people with developmental disabilities. Their work goes beyond medication management or care plans, they support connection, stability, and well-being in every interaction.
Meeting Health Needs Through Relationship
AbleLight nurses serve in homes and programs across the country, supporting individuals with a wide range of medical, behavioral, and emotional needs. Their work is deeply personal. Because they care for the same individuals over time, they develop strong relationships and a deep understanding of each person’s health history, routines, habits, and communication styles.
This allows our nurses to recognize even the smallest changes in a condition or behavior, an early warning sign that may prevent a serious issue down the line. It also means they can tailor care in ways that promote trust and reduce fear, especially for those with sensory sensitivities or limited verbal communication. These relationships are key in addressing health insecurity, one of the major social challenges faced by people with developmental disabilities.
Supporting the Whole Person
Our nurses also help individuals navigate a complex healthcare system that isn’t always designed for accessibility. They coordinate appointments, translate medical guidance into understandable steps, and ensure the communication between healthcare providers, families, and support teams is clear and complete.
But the role of our nurses doesn’t end with physical health. Many individuals with developmental disabilities are also at greater risk of mental distress and social isolation. Our nurses understand this, and their presence often brings comfort and reassurance. They know when someone might need extra encouragement, a listening ear, or simply someone to sit with them in a difficult moment.
They also support direct support professionals and families, offering training, insights, and emotional support that strengthens the entire circle of care.
Thank You
This Nurses Week, we are proud to celebrate the difference our nurses make every day at AbleLight.
Their work is more than clinical care. It is about building trust, promoting dignity, and supporting each person’s journey toward health, independence, and belonging. Through their dedication, people with developmental disabilities experience better health outcomes, stronger connections, and a deeper sense of being seen and valued.
AbleLight nurses are not only caregivers, they are advocates, mentors, and friends. Their steady presence brings comfort, hope, and opportunity into the lives of the people we support.
We are grateful for everything they do and honored to walk alongside them in this mission.
Happy Nurses Week 2025!
