Celebrating 35 Years of the ADA

Man wearing medals from a Special Olympics event celebrates with an AbleLight DSP

On July 26th, we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a groundbreaking legislation that forever changed what access, inclusion, and equality looks like in our county.

Signed in 1990, the ADA protects the rights of people with disabilities and affirms that every person deserves the chance to live, work, learn, and participate fully in their community. At AbleLight, we are proud to celebrate this milestone and reflect on the meaningful change it has inspired.

More access. More opportunity. More belonging.

The ADA opened doors to employment, public spaces, education, housing, and services that were once out of reach for many. It made ramps, elevators, accessible restrooms, and public transportation common across the country. It ensured that inclusion is not just a goal but a legal right.

At AbleLight, we see the impact of the ADA every day. We support individuals as they build lives filled with purpose and connection. People in our day programs explore their communities, form impactful friendships, and grow in confidence. Our employment services help individuals gain skills, discover their strengths, and find meaningful jobs. More than 30% of team members at our thrift shops are people with developmental disabilities, showing what true inclusion can look like when people are given the opportunity to contribute and belong.

A moment to celebrate. A mission to continue.

The ADA created lasting change, and we are committed to continuing this progress. Every safe home, every job opportunity, every moment of community moves us closer to a world where people of all abilities are truly seen and valued.
